Huawei AR129CGVW-L – Auto-Negotiation Compatibility with USG FLEX H Series Multi-Gig Interfaces

A compatibility limitation has been identified when connecting the Huawei AR129CGVW-L router to the Multi-Gig Ethernet interfaces of Zyxel USG FLEX H Series firewalls.

In this specific combination, the Ethernet link may fail to establish when both devices are configured for Auto-Negotiation. This behavior is limited to the Huawei AR129CGVW-L model and has not been identified as a general issue affecting other ISP routers or Ethernet devices.

As a workaround, configuring the interface speed manually to 1000 Mbps Full Duplex, or using a standard 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, allows the link to operate normally.

Symptoms

When the Huawei AR129CGVW-L is connected to a Multi-Gig interface on a USG FLEX H firewall (for example FLEX200H):

  • The Ethernet link may remain down while Auto-Negotiation is enabled.
  • The WAN interface cannot establish a physical connection.
  • Manually configuring the interface speed to 1000 Mbps Full Duplex restores connectivity.
  • Alternatively, connecting the Huawei device to a standard 1 Gigabit Ethernet interface establishes the link successfully.

Cause

Based on the interoperability assessment, this behavior is caused by an Auto-Negotiation interoperability limitation between the Huawei AR129CGVW-L Ethernet implementation and the Multi-Gig Ethernet hardware used in the USG FLEX H Series.

The Huawei AR129CGVW-L is an End-of-Life (EOL) product. Because of its lifecycle status, no further interoperability validation or firmware optimization is planned specifically for this device.

This behavior should not be interpreted as a general compatibility issue with Huawei devices or with Multi-Gig Ethernet technology.

Workaround

Use one of the following methods:

Option 1 (Recommended)

Configure both Ethernet interfaces with:

  • Speed: 1000 Mbps
  • Duplex: Full Duplex

instead of Auto-Negotiation.

Option 2

Connect the Huawei AR129CGVW-L to a standard 1 Gigabit Ethernet interface instead of a Multi-Gig port.

Additional Information

This interoperability limitation has only been confirmed with the Huawei AR129CGVW-L router.

If a similar Auto-Negotiation issue is observed with a currently supported third-party device, please contact Zyxel Technical Support for further investigation.
