This guide provides step-by-step instructions on creating VLANs on the following devices.
Scenario
For this VLAN example we will be configuring two VLANs (VLAN 100 and VLAN 200) on a GS1900-8HP switch. Port 8 will be used as the uplink port to the router which is VLAN aware. Port 7 will be connected to a wireless access point which is also VLAN aware. Port 6 will be used to connect a computer to VLAN 100.
Supported Devices
GS1900-8
GS1900-8HP
GS1900-10HP
GS1900-16
GS1900-24
GS1900-24E
GS1900-24HP
GS1900-48
GS1900-48HP
Initial Setup
Before the switch can be connected to the network, the IP address must be changed. The default IP address on the switch is 192.168.1.1, this is the most commonly used IP address, most router manufacturers use this as the default IP. The IP address on the switch will need to be changed so that:
- It does not conflict with any address currently on your network. As stated before 192.168.1.1 is the IP most router manufacturers use for the router IP, an IP conflict will cause communication issues on the network.
- IP address must be changed so that once connected to the network it can still be accessed for further configurations.
To make the changes on the switch connect your computer to one of the available Ethernet ports. Make sure both your computer and switch are powered ON. Manually configure an IP address on your computer's NIC card, use an IP address between 192.168.1.2~192.168.1.254, the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, no gateway address (router address) or DNS server addresses are necessary. Below you can find instructions to change the IP address settings on your computer.
Manually set IP on Windows OS
Manually set IP on macOS
Set your computer IP address settings back to default settings (DHCP) when finished.
VLAN Setup
- Open an internet browser on the computer (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.) an erase the address bar entry. On the address bar type http://192.168.1.1 and hit the ENTER/RETURN key. A login screen will open asking for user credentials, the username is 'admin' and password is '1234'.
- On the status page you will see four icons on the far left for the four different menus. If you hover the mouse over each icon it will show you the menu name. Click on the "Configuration" menu icon .
- In the configuration menu click on the VLAN menu to see more options, click on VLAN again.
- In the VLAN menu there are three tabs, VLAN, Port and VLAN Port. On the VLAN tab click on the "Add" button to insert the VLAN IDs.
- Specify the VLAN ID number under the "VLAN List" option and give it a name.
- Once you have entered all your VLAN IDs they will be listed in the VLAN tab.
- Click on the "VLAN Port" tab to add the ID's to physical ports on the switch. You will see a drop down window where you can select the VLAN ID you want to configure ports for as well as a table of all the physical ports built-in to the switch. Click the dropdown box and select VLAN 100 set all ports to "forbidden" except for ports 6-8. Port 6 will be hosting a computer which is not VLAN aware so traffic needs to be "untagged". Port 7 & 8 will be connected to VLAN aware devices so these ports will be "tagged". Click the Apply button at the bottom of the screen to save the settings.
- Because the computer on port 6 is not VLAN aware but we need to make sure that it communicates with VLAN 100 we will need to change the PVID for port 6 so that the GS1900-XX switch forces port 6 traffic into VLAN 100. Click on the "Port" tab, check the box for port 6 and click the "Edit" menu button at the top of the screen.
- Set the PVID for port 6 to "100".
- Return to the "VLAN Port" menu and configure the ports for VLAN 200. VLAN 200 will only have ports 7 & 8 as members. Click the "Apply" button at the bottom of the window to save the settings.
- The VLAN setup is now complete.
- To change the switches IP address to match your networks IP scheme go to menu Configuration → System → IP.
- Set the IP info manually or set the switch to obtain the IP info from your DHCP server. By default the switch can only be accessed through VLAN1, you can change the management VLAN if you are planning to access the configuration screen through a different VLAN.
