Scenario
This guide covers first time setup for internet access on ZyWALL (ZLD) routers.
Initial Setup
Before we begin the internet (WAN) setup on the ZyWALL router, the following steps need to be completed.
- Unpack the ZyWALL.
- Connect the power supply (power cord) to the ZyWALL.
- Press the power button on the ZyWALL to turn the device ON (router takes 3-4 minutes to power up).
- Connect a computer to a LAN1 port on the ZyWALL, P2.
- Connect the DSL/Cable modem to the ZyWALL, P1.
Accessing the WebUI
To access the ZyWALL's web configuration page please open a web browser on your computer (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.). On the address bar please type http://192.168.1.1 to access the WebUI.
When prompted for user credentials, type admin for the "User Name" and 1234 for the "Password". Click the Login button to enter the WebUI.
Note: If the default password has been changed, use the new password to login. If this is the first time setting up the device and it is not accepting the "1234" password please press the RESET button on the device (located in rear panel) and hold it down for 10-15 seconds.
The following screen will prompt to update the administrator password. Enter a new administrative password and click the Apply button to save the change.
Click Ignore to keep the default password (1234) and continue with the setup.
WAN Setup Wizard
The initial setup wizard will appear when logging-in to the ZyWALL's WebUI for the first time. Follow the prompts to setup the WAN port connection. Click Next to run the wizard setup for internet access.
Note: If the "Installation Setup Wizard" does not appear when you login, run the wizard manually. Please refer to the "Troubleshooting Tips" at the end of this guide.
Set the ISP Parameters for the internet connection and IP Address Assignment. Click Next to continue the setup wizard.
IP Address Assignment: Most ISP's provide a dynamic IP address to residential subscribers. Set the IP Address Assignment to "Auto" to automatically receive IP address settings from your ISP. If you are paying for a fixed IP (static IP) please set the IP Address Assignment option to "Fixed" and have your fixed IP info ready to type in on the next screen.
This screen displays a summary or the "ISP Parameters" and "IP Address Assignment" settings you selected on the previous screen. Click Next to save the settings.
Note: Please be sure to verify that the settings are correct.
Once the wizard is done configuring the ZyWALL with the settings you selected for the ISP parameters, click Next to finalize the setup.
Click Next to continue to the Registration option.
Note: The ZyWALL includes a 30-day trial of UTM services (Anti-virus, IDP/AppPatrol and Content Filter). Not all services are available on all ZyWALL/USG models.
Click the Register button to complete the device registration with MyZyxel. Registering the device is necessary to be able to download future firmware releases for ZLD appliances running firmware 4.25 and newer.
Clicking the button will open a new tab to the registration page. Login to your MyZyxel account or create a new account if you don't currently have one. Once logged into your MyZyxel account click Next to run through the device registration.
Click the Activate All button to register available UTM trials.
Once this process is complete close the window or click on the ZyWALL/USG WebUI tab to complete the setup.
Click the Refresh button to have the ZyWALL/USG contact the MyZyxel server to verify registration.
The next screen will show UTM license activation, continue hitting Next until you reach the Wireless Settings option. At this point click Finish to end the wizard.
Troubleshooting
If internet access in not working after running the setup wizard:
- Verify the ISP Parameters & IP Address Assignment settings with your service provider.
- Make sure that P1 (WAN Port) on the ZyWALL is connected to the DSL/Cable modem.
- If you are using a cable modem, the cache on the modem will need to be reset. To reset the modem cache, you can: (if the cable modem also provides telephone service, DO NOT run the reset procedure, contact your ISP for assistance)
- Press and hold down the RESET button for 15 seconds to clear the cache.
- If the modem does not have a RESET button, power down for 5 minutes to clear the cache. Remove the power cable and battery backup (if applicable).
- Contact your cable internet provider to have them RESET the modem from their end.
- If you are using a DSL modem, please verify that it is in bridge mode. Most DSL modems are a modem/router combination, it is highly recommended to contact the internet service provider and have them place the modem in a bridge mode.
- Reboot/Restart the ZyWALL.
- Contact Zyxel Technical Support for additional assistance. Support is available Mon-Fri from 8am-5pm PT @ 800-255-4101 option 5 or submit a request form here.
