Overview
A WAN (Wide Area Network) connection is an outside connection to another network or the Internet. It connects your private networks, such as a LAN (Local Area Network) and other networks, so that a computer in one location can communicate with computers in other locations.

Accessing the Web Configurator
To access the device web configuration screen to configure the modem/router, please connect your computer directly to an available LAN port. A wired computer is needed to minimize downtime when making changes to the configuration. During the configuration process the device may reboot to apply changes successfully, this means a temporary loss of connection to the network, this is why it is not recommended to make any configuration changes via wireless.
Open an internet browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.) and delete the contents of the address bar. Type http://192.168.1.1 on the address bar and hit the enter/return key on the keyboard. 192.168.1.1 is the ZyXEL default IP address, if your VMG was provided to you by the internet service provider it may be running proprietary firmware/software based on your provider's standards for operation. If this is the case you may need to contact the service provider to obtain the IP address for the web configurator and login credentials (administrative credentials). Once the correct web configurator address is entered on the browser, the following screen will appear requesting the administrator credentials.
Enter the ZyXEL administrative credentials: username=admin & password=1234
Or, enter the ISP proprietary administrator credentials: must be obtained from the ISP
After the ZyXEL default credentials are entered a prompt will appear to create a new admin password. Create a new password the press the Apply button to save the settings, or, check the box "No need to change password. Do not show this page next time" and click Apply to keep the default password.
Internet Setup
Depending on the model of VMG device you have, Internet access settings can be configured from the Network Setting → Broadband.
Different models will have more than one connection option for internet services such as ADSL, VDSL or Ethernet. If the VMG was provided by the internet service provider and they use TR-069, the modem will automatically dial home (ISP server) to get internet connection settings. If TR-069 is not available or the modem was purchased through a third-party, you can configure the internet connection settings manually. Below are examples for the most common internet connection setups.
ADSL/VDSL Connection:
- An ADSL connection requires a VPI, VCI and encapsulation method to successfully establish the internet connection. This info must be gathered from the ISP. The VPI is a number between 0-255; the VCI is a number between 32-65535. The encapsulation can be PPPoE, PPPoA or ENET ENCAP (Ethernet/DHCP). Once the info is obtained from the ISP it can be configured on the ADSL built-in connection profile.
- Encapsulation – Select the appropriate encapsulation based on ISP setup.
- PPP User Name – Enter the PPPoE user name, usually this is the primary email account.
- PPP Password – Enter the PPPoE password, usually this is also the primary user email password, but, some ISP's provide different credentials for PPPoE connection.
- PPP Connection Trigger – By default this is set to Auto Connect which is an always active connection. On Demand establishes the internet connection when an internet site (address) is called upon.
- IP Address – Select the method of the IP Address connection. This is usually set to obtain the info automatically. Businesses may have purchased a static IP address in which case the Static IP Address option would need to be selected and IP info entered.
- VPI – Enter the ISP provided virtual private identifier.
- VCI – Enter the ISP provided virtual circuit identifier.
- Click OK to save/apply the settings.
DHCP/ENET ENCAP/IPoE Connection:
- This type of connection does not require authentication to establish the internet connection, just the correct VPI/VCI.
- Encapsulation – Select the appropriate encapsulation based on ISP setup.
Ethernet:
- This connection type does not require user authentication or VPI/VCI matching. Only requirement is the IP connection method, whether a dynamic (DHCP) address or a static (manual) address.
